Praised for her “rich and capacious mezzo soprano” (San Francisco Chronicle), Cuban-American singer Alexandra Urquiola is a member of the Opernstudio at Staatsoper Stuttgart.
This fall, Alexandra can be seen performing Dritte Dame (Die Zauberflöte), L’enfant (Das Kind) in a German translation of Maurice Ravel’s L'enfant et les sortilèges (Die verzauberte Welt), and singing a Liedkonzert at Staatsoper Stuttgart. She will also sing the role of Emmeline (Artus) in a film-project adaptation. In Staatsoper Stuttgart’s 19/20 Season, Urquiola performed the roles of Annina (La Traviata), Linetta (Die Liebe zu drei Orangen), and Fjodor/Die Aktivistin (BORIS/Secondhand Zeit). Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Alexandra was unable to make her debuts singing Ozias (Juditha Triumphans), Marta/Pantalis (Mefistofele), and Emmeline (Artus). In the summer season, Alexandra was seen performing Dinah in Trouble in Tahiti with Staatsoper Stuttgart as a part of their “Oper Trotz Corona” series. In 2019, Alexandra joined Steven Blier to premiere the song cycle ELEMENTOS by Clarice Assad in the New York Festival of Song. Reviewers said: “Alexandra Urquiola’s liquid mezzo and striking performance of “Water—Maré de Água Viva (A Tide of Living Water)” fell at the sublime confluence of sorrow and peace.” (I Care if You Listen) Urquiola recently completed her fellowships with the Merola Opera Program at the San Francisco Opera Center and Opera Theatre of St. Louis.
